My experience with cleanse diets has been one of ups and downs. Cleanses say a lot about what they will do, but not a lot about what they will do to you. We get caught up in the end results when looking at these kinds of diets. I think I should share my thoughts and experiences with you.
First, let's look at why you are wanting to undertake a cleanse
in the first place. Most people decide to do a cleanse in order to do one of
two things: flush toxins from you body that have built up over time or lose a
few pounds in a short period of time. With that in mind let's start by talking
about some of my experiences with these types of diets.
One of these experiences that I have had that you might not have
thought of is these diets reduce your blood sugar level. My experience with
this was a large reduction in energy levels, feelings of dizzy or spaced out,
and trouble sleeping. My body would wake itself up in the middle of the night
from hunger. Sugar is energy, with out it your body will die. So it is safe to
say that if your body is telling you that it needs this substance, it is
probably important to get it.
Also, an unknown that you might not know is that on these diets
you will lose muscle mass. Your body will begin to eat its muscles on these
diets. That is what happens with me. My muscle mass and tone was dramatically
reduced. My strength was down the drain, and I could not keep up in the gym.
Another unknown to you might be how these diets are not
nutritionally balanced. With that being said, my issue with this was that I was
missing out on essential micronutrients. I was not eating right and my body was
letting me know through issues like thinking. I could not seem to full apply
myself mentally to problems. This was due to a lack of the micronutrients in my
diet. This is something that is not really talked about, but it is a very true
effect of these diets.
Well if you are reading this and think that there cannot be
anything positive you are wrong. A positive experience that I had was it opened
me up to eating different foods. These diets usually consist of exotic food
like juices and spices and foods that have not been processed. This experience
changed my food choices that I put in my shopping cart. This lead me to eat
more raw food like carrots and spinach.
Another experience that I think I need to share is that these
diets are only a temporary. If you complete a cleanse diet or strip seven
pounds away in a week, the toxins will come back and the weight will return if
you don't change your lifestyle. My experience was that I was always on some
diet to get where I wanted to be. You have to change everything in order for
the effects to last. I would go through all of the suffering for 7 to 14 days,
then the weight or the sick feelings from the toxins would come right back.
I
hope this has been helpful and insightful as you research what diet is best for
you. Remember a diet is short-term, while a life change is life-long.
